safariSafari wasn’t all cute giraffes and zebras… it also included mud, aggressive elefants, flooding rivers, and badly planned supplies of food and water – which turned this into an amazing and unforgettable trip. Did someone mention “Mama” and Johnny Cash…?

After safari we headed down south towards Mombasa to venture out to the Lamu Islands where Dion lives.

Kizingo (“point” in Swahili) is just as amazing as it looks. Lamu Town was less touristy and “glamorous” than expected but lamualthemore exciting for us! People are super friendly and everyone meets you with a cheery “jambo”!

Dion and Emily took such good care of us, and it was a real inspiration to meet their parents, Louis and Mary-Jo. Thanks so much.

summer sum-up August 25, 2006

Filed under: living in norway — Miriam @ 7:45 am

Just got back from a wicked three weeks holiday with time spent in the Norwegian mountains and in Kragerø by the coast. The ideal mix of lazy sunny days and an active hiking holiday. Check out the photos by clicking on the Flickr banner below, or click here

Highlights were….

….boat trip in Kragerø with my friend Torunn + other friends, followed by a big prawn feast* on her parents pier the same evening. Torunn is such a beautiful and genuine person, Nick thinks someone should write a poem about her.

…doing nothing at my stepdad’s little primitive cottage on the island, with no electricity or running water. It was a soul mending exercise that I’d recommend to anyone.

….a couple of 5-hour long hikes in the mountains with Nick. Some of the views were simply breathtaking, and the extreme moon landscape terrain, pretty views, silence and walking had a somewhat meditiative effect.

I am now back at work, suffering the slow start-up after the summer holiday (hence the naughty blog update..!). Can’t wait to become a student again, no regrets about quitting!

*Prawn feasts is a phenomena that I haven’t come across anywhere else but in Norway (and possibly Sweden) where you have unpeeled freshly cooked prawns (preferably caught and cooked the same morning) and you peel them yourself and arrange them on a piece of loaf with mayonnes, salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon. It’s basically like a DIY prawn-sandwich – only better and fresher – and it’s the actual peeling-thing that is special about it. Fondue has a similar aspect of “social eating”.

Summer July 14, 2006

Filed under: living in norway — Miriam @ 8:40 am

Finally, I’m about to indulge in a three week long summer holiday! I’m not going to do anything except read, swim, eat, go for walks, drink wine, eat some more, go for runs, go for boat trips, venture out to little islands, go fishing, drink beer with my lovely friends, visit Skåtøy café… Life is good.

It’s funny: as soon as Nick and I decided that we definitely want to move back to England this autumn, the Norwegian summer hit us with a bang . It’s so lovely, i love it. My secret plan is to spend summers in Norway and as soon as the cold kicks in I’ll come running back to England :-) (ok, I admit the weather isn’t exactly the Bahamas in England either, but at least you don’t have to worry about getting snow in your socks on the way to work every morning)

I hope you’re all enjoying your summer too, where ever you are.

Karl Pilkington and Santa Claus July 11, 2006

Filed under: General — Miriam @ 12:09 pm

I had a long discussion with Nick at the weekend about the identity of Karl Pilkington, star of the Ricky Gervais show. Is this guy for real? Yeh, right. This is just another Da Vinci Code scenario where people LIKE to believe in an ENTERTAINING STORY, similar to believing in Santa Claus. As for being an actor or not: do you believe Jim Carrey is a freak in his personal life too?!

Isn’t it for instance peculiar that with all the rumours and debates in the media around the identity of Karl Pilkington no journalists seem to have managed to track down Karl’s mates, family or somebody who knows him? Nobody knows anything about this man apart from what he tells us himself during the shows!

I bet Ricky G, and probably “Karl” too, are laughing all the way to the bank.

How to make the perfect cup of tea July 5, 2006

Filed under: General — Miriam @ 10:56 am

When Nick and I first started going out he once came to see me in Paul Kent (halls of residence). I offered him a cup of tea – like you do – but little did I know that what the guy in front of me was a bit of a tea-snob… Not once did it occur to me that he might not like the way I prepared his precious drink, and I’m afraid I probably both squeezed and stirred, and certainly didn’t heat up the cups! Ooawww..

I am now a converted and dedicated tea lover, who admittedly would rather not have a cup of tea than having a really bad one. I found an hilarious article about tea making the other day when I was bored at work, check it out: The Ultimate Brew

Mid-Summer Night – St. Hans aften June 25, 2006

Filed under: living in norway — Miriam @ 6:33 am

I went to my mum and Roy’s for mid summer, or St. Hans aften, as it is called in Norwegian. I read that the reason why we light the huge bonfires is to keep evil spirits and whiches away on “magic” nights…

Where I’m from the bonfires are placed on little islands and people use their private boats to go and watch it. My family and I went in my stepdad’s beautiful old wooden “snekke”.
